Warm weather is here, bringing great color to landscapes everywhere. There are many colorful plants to choose from to add color to your yard including annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees.
As most people know, annual plants give the best color throughout the entire season and require little care. You can choose from Begonias, Impatience, Dianthus, Mexican Heather, Vinca, Petunia, Lantana, Verbina, Million Bells, Coleus, Dusty Miller, Portulaca, Purslane, Geraniums, Sweet Potato Vine and Caladiums to name a few. Perennials, unlike annuals, will come back year after year. They are great to use just about anywhere in your landscape since they come in many varieties for sun or shade and will compliment any area of your yard. Here are a few varieties that are great to use: Coreopsis; Huechera; Iris; Daylily; Miss Huff; Lantana; Agapanthus; Black-eyed Susan; Lambs Ear; Shasta Daisy; Jacob’s Ladder; Hosta Lily; Pin Cushion; Dianthus; Gaura, which has butterfly-like blooms; Canna Lily; Sage; Bee Balm; Peony; Astilbe; and Spiderwort. Most perennial varieties are available in different bloom colors.
Shrubs can also give great summer color. Knockout Rose, Spirea, Barberry, Lorapetalum, Abelia, Butterfly Bush, Variegated Pittisporum, Gardenia, Gold Mop Cypress, Crippsii Cypress, Euonymus and Wine and Rose Weigela are just a few examples of colorful shrubs.
There are a few trees that give you summer color, such as the popular Crape Myrtle, Forest Pansy Redbud, Purple Leaf Plum, Magnolia, Japanese Maple and Hearts of Gold Redbud.
