Fragrant plants can add depth, dimension
Fragrant plants can bring another wonderful dimension to your landscape. Using fragrant plants in heavy use areas, such as an entryway, patio and deck, porch, sitting area or pool area will give you and your guests a pleasing aroma and sense of relaxation. There are many types of fragrant plants, including shrubs, perennials and herbs.
There are several great shrubs to use for fragrance in your garden. Gardenias, which are blooming now, are available in different varieties and growth habits. Creeping Gardenias and frost-proof gardenias are low growing. Daisy, Kleins Hardy and White Gem varieties are medium height growers. First Love and August Beauty are taller growing gardenia varieties. Another shrub, Tea Olive is becoming very popular because of its extremely fragrant white flowers in spring. They work well at the corners of the house, for a privacy hedge or as an accent plant. A few other examples of fragrant shrubs are Korean Spice, Viburnum, Banana Shrub, Daphne, Butterfly Bush, Sweet Shrub, Pittisporum, Clethra, Itea and Witch Hazel.
