Fragrant plants can add depth, dimension
Fragrant plants can bring another wonderful dimension to your landscape. Using fragrant plants in heavy use areas, such as an entryway, patio and deck, porch, sitting area or pool area will give you and your guests a pleasing aroma and sense of relaxation. There are many types of fragrant plants, including shrubs, perennials and herbs.
There are several great shrubs to use for fragrance in your garden. Gardenias, which are blooming now, are available in different varieties and growth habits. Creeping Gardenias and frost-proof gardenias are low growing. Daisy, Kleins Hardy and White Gem varieties are medium height growers. First Love and August Beauty are taller growing gardenia varieties. Another shrub, Tea Olive is becoming very popular because of its extremely fragrant white flowers in spring. They work well at the corners of the house, for a privacy hedge or as an accent plant. Hybrid tea roses are probably the most well known because of their beautiful flowers and wonderful aroma which make them great for cut flower arrangements. A few other examples of fragrant shrubs are Korean Spice, Viburnum, Banana Shrub, Daphne, Butterfly Bush, Sweet Shrub, Pittisporum, Clethra, Itea and Witch Hazel.
Perennials can also give your landscape fragrance as well as color. Some good examples of include Cone Flower, Phlox, Dianthus, Hosta Lily, iris, lavender, and peony. If you need a vine that has fragrance, Jasmine Vine or Honeysuckle are great choices. Herbs are great to use, because not only they are good for cooking, but also many are very fragrant. Fragrant herbs include rosemary, lavender, catnip, basil, mint, lemon balm, thyme and sage.
Consider using fragrant plants in your landscape and enjoy relaxing outdoors among their various aromas.
