Ornamental plants and berries can add a dimension

LAKE OCONEE — The use of ornamental plants with berries can add great interest to your landscaping. Since many plants flower, plants with berries will quite often give the difference needed in a landscape. Also many berry plants will give color once blooming time is finished. Use them in areas that are focal points, natural areas, entrances, color beds, near walls or foundations. Some taller growing plants with berries are Serviceberry, and Dogwoods, which have red berries. Taller growing Hollies such as Nellie Stevens, Fosteri, Savannah, Burfordi and Upright or Weeping Yaupon are known for their wonderful red berries. Medium growing plants with berries are Nandina; Beauty Berry loaded with purplish berries in the winter; Hollies such as Needle Point, Dwarf Burfordi, or variegated Holly; Pyracantha; Elaeangnus; Ligustrum; Mahonia and Viburnum.

For areas that require lower growing plants try Cotoneaster, which comes in several different varieties, or try Taylor’s Rudolph Yaupon Holly that is well known for its abundant winter berries. For parts of the landscape that need very low growing plants try using Creeping Raspberry that has a red raspberry-like berry. Consider all these options when designing your yard since berrying plants can add such wonderful color to the landscape. Let the garden professionals show you berrying plants that are available for use in your landscaping or have a designer come to your home and let them know that you would like to add berry plants to your plan.

Another type of plant that can be used in your landscape is fruiting plants. Not only are they edible, they also flower. A good way to use them is in planting beds in a way that makes them look like they belong there. Some examples to consider are Apples, Peaches, Plums, Figs or Blueberries.
