Dress up the yard for the Christmas season
Christmas time is here and its time to start dressing up your yard and home to give it a wonderful holiday feeling. Start off with plants that have berries like hollies; varieties of hollies that have berries include needle point holly, dwarf burfordi holly, Savannah Holly, Fosteri Holly and Yaupon Holly. You can cut branches off hollies to use for decorations for tables, mantles and doors. Consider planting camellia sasanqua, which blooms during this season.
To really give a festive holiday season feeling consider using garland, which is available now either fresh or artificial. The fresh cut garland has a great fragrance that for many invokes memories of holidays gone by. Garland can be wrapped around light posts, over doorways, garages and fences. Add lights to the garland for a great nighttime look. Another great look is to add wreaths, also available in fresh and artificial; they look great in windows, on front doors, entryways, fireplaces and fences. There are many other great fresh-cut accent pieces available including sconces, table centerpieces with candles, and mantle pieces. Think about adding red bows throughout your home or in the landscape on light posts, mailboxes, fence railings; add them to wreaths, garland and trees. Adding Christmas lights is very popular; they are easy to install and look great in trees, shrubs, around doors, posts, along roof lines and railings or fences.
A traditional plant for inside the home, poinsettias are very popular because they come in different sizes and colors including red, white and marble of varying shades. Poinsettias are great to use to accent areas in the home such as tables, fireplaces, hallways and sunrooms for example.
Christmas cactus is also a great way to get color in your holiday decorating. There are several colors to choose from to accent your decorating theme. With proper care, Christmas cactus can be kept to bloom each year during the holiday season.
Give your home a great holiday look that will bring a festive feeling to the holidays for you and your guests this season.
Happy gardening.
