LOQG holds monthly meeting
Lake Oconee Quilt Guild members got a double surprise at the October meeting. Anita Heady, the featured speaker, got hurt and could not attend. But in true professional manner, she enlisted a fellow quilt artist and friend, Frances Arnold, who stepped in to save the day.
Frances comes from a long line of quilters; her great grandmother taught her grandmother who taught her mother, who started quilting at the age of 12. Frances watched her mother hand appliqué and hand quilt, noting it took a full year to complete one quilt. Being born in a different generation, Frances gravitated toward other, quicker, forms of needlework, mostly needlepoint. But she eventually expanded to crewel embroidery and counted cross stitch. She had never made a quilt until she and a friend were both expecting. Frances wanted to give her friend something special and decided to make a baby quilt. Unlike her mother, she figured out how to attach appliqué with a machine as well as quilt by machine. The year was 1985, and another devoted quilter was hooked.
Every quilt has a story, and Frances took members along on an odyssey of the last 25 years sharing her quilts, memories and lessons learned along the way. There are many reasons for making a quilt, but whatever your reason is, “just enjoy it!” You are invited to view Francis Arnold’s work at francesquilts.blogspot.com.
LOQG is blessed to have as members many great quilters. Two were recently recognized with blue ribbons at the East Cobb Quilt Show. Regina Carter won first place for a whole cloth quilt and a medium appliqué while Mary Kay Mouton won first for miniatures. They set high standards, but their quilts are always an inspiration.
The program for Nov. 3 will be on the Wonder and Versatility of Batik Squares. Taffy McLaughlin from Intown Quilters in Atlanta will demonstrate the variety and creativity to be found working with batiks. She will display many of her quilts and explain her special techniques working with this fabric. As a special bonus she will bring a selection of fabric, patterns and quilting notions for sale during the meeting.
LOQG meets the first Tuesday of each month except for July and August at Lake Oconee Lutheran Church (behind the Harmony Association Building). Coffee is available at 9:30 a.m. and the program begins at 10. All interested parties are invited to attend. Non-members are asked to pay a $3 fee. Due to current economic conditions, everyone attending LOQG meetings is asked to bring a canned good for distribution to local food banks.
The purpose of the guild is to promote the art and craft of quilting through encouragement and education, as well as building fellowship within the community.
