GREENSBORO — The Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) began their 2010 Season with the Education & Outreach Fundraiser, The Winter Ball, at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation on Sunday, January 10, 2010. It was at this event that the new Board of Directors was announced. Since this time, the Board along with OPAS staff has been hard at work planning the 2010 Season.
It is with great pleasure that OPAS announces their next production; ABT II (American Ballet Theater 2) on March 19, 2010 at the GCSU Russell Auditorium in Milledgeville, GA. In addition to the public performance scheduled for 7:30pm Friday evening, OPAS will present ABT II in an educational program that will be open to the high school students of Baldwin County. “We are exciting to be extending our programs into Baldwin County and exposing their students to this internationally renowned ballet company” said Elaine Cinnamon, OPAS Education Outreach Coordinator and Board Member.
ABT II, under the direction of Wes Chapman, is a classical company of 13 young dancers of outstanding potential, handpicked from around the world. In its fifteenth season, ABT II prepares young dancers to enter American Ballet Theatre as well as other professional ballet companies. It also brings the excitement of close contact with a professional company to communities across the country through public performances and educational outreach programs.
This Company’s varied repertoire mirrors the traditions of American Ballet Theatre, and, while it is firmly rooted in classical ballet, it often features contemporary choreography. The New York Times calls ABT II dancers “Well-trained and willing. They perform with an appealing blend of freshness and individual presence,” while The Star-Ledger says, “ABT II delights audiences with its youthful vigor and panache. These dancers are firecrackers!”
Tickets go on sale Monday, March 1st ($35 for Adults, $10 for children and students) and can be purchase through the OPAS Box Office at 706-999-1518 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. For more information on ABT II and future OPAS productions, please visit our website at www.opas.org.
