Lake Oconee Twirlers dance the night away

LAKE OCONEE — If you're ever in the mood for good times, great atmosphere, and the chance to learn some square dancing moves, then Lake Country Twirlers can help you shake a leg.

Square dancing is the official folk dance of the state of Georgia. Lake Country Twirlers continues with this tradition by bringing to Lake Oconee good clean fun. For more than 30 years, Lake Country Twirlers has brought fun and laughter to people of all ages.

Lake Country Twirlers was once referred to by another name. The dance club used to be called the Twin Bridges Twirlers.

“We used to dance at the Senior Citizens Center at Twin Bridges, but when we branched off into our own thing we decided to change the name,” said Co-President Jim Belcher.

Belcher has watched the Lake Country Twirlers grow in numbers over the past five years. As of now, there are 29 members in the dance club and membership continues to expand. Caller for the dances is Dan Mitchell. Mitchell always finds a way to get the audience involved by bringing them on stage for impromptu lessons.

"Beginners usually catch on quickly and have a fun time dancing with members and listening to Dan call,” said Belcher.

On Jan. 10 The Lake Country Twirlers will have a free open house to welcome possible new members. The event will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Following the open house there will be an introduction to square dancing from 8 to 9 p.m. Everyone is invited to come by, meet members, enjoy refreshments and learn a few steps.

"If we get enough people who are interested we will start a square dancing class,” Belcher said.

The Lake Country Twirlers meet Thursday nights at the Harmony Community Association building on state Route 44 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Young and old alike are welcome to participate in this exciting and friendly activity.
