The Exchange Club of Lake Oconee aims to bring safety awareness to children of all ages with a fun fall festival twist at their first ever Safety Saturday. The event will be held at Redeemer Episcopal Academy, 680 Old Phoenix Rd., Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. until noon. Focusing on crime, fire, gun and health safety, there will be fingerprinting, a K-9 Crime dog presentation, karate demos, the Smokehouse unit, a fire truck and ambulance, gun safety demonstrations, blood pressure screenings, and chiropractic demonstrations by Smith Family Chiropractic. Kids can also enjoy a giant bouncy slide, face painting, trick-or-treating, pumpkin painting, a soccer play area and much more! The Exchange Club of Lake Oconee is a non-profit service club that works to make our community a better place to live through programs of service in Americanism, community service, youth activities and its national project, the Prevention of Child Abuse. Children living in the Lake Oconee area are invited to put on their favorite costumes, bring a big sack to collect candies and other treats, and join the fun on Friday, Oct. 31 at Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church. Parents take note: For a safe and fun evening of games, “Trunk or Treating,” and enjoying a variety of live music, bring your children to Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church parking lot. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. and will end at 8 p.m. Kids will have a great time in the inflatable “bounce house,” going down a giant slide, enjoying many different games and winning prizes, decorating cookies, have their faces painted. Also there will be a fire safety house for their enjoyment and education. Live acoustic guitar music and a variety of ‘50s “doo-op,” and other Rock n’ Roll oldies will add to the evening’s entertainment. Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) — the largest private medical oncology/hematology practice in the Southeast — presents “Breast Cancer Answers: A Free Community Event With Barbara Dooley” on Wednesday Oct. 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Empire Room of The Classic Center in Athens (300 N. Thomas Street). Former Bulldog MVP, current sideline reporter, and cancer survivor Loran Smith will serve as the event’s moderator. The free event is being hosted by the Magic of Life Foundation, and is sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa) and Athens Regional Medical Center. It will begin with a brief reception, followed by Dooley’s keynote speech, and will conclude with an audience

question-and-answer session – moderated by Smith – with an expert panel of physicians and cancer care providers.

The Lake Oconee chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will host a Women in the Outdoors event on June 13 -14, 2009 at Lake Oconee Shooting Club in Eatonton.
