Rotary District (District 6910) Governor, Garland C “Gary” Moore, visited the Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam County, during the club’s weekly meeting.
Part of Gary’s responsibility during the 2008 -09 Rotary Year, is to meet with the individual Rotary Clubs that comprise District 6910, to share insights of Rotary projects and priorities for the Rotary Year. During his visit, he met with Rotarians to review the current and future state of our Club and the service projects identified by our club for 2008-09.
Moore’s comments to the Rotarians included: “People join the Rotary to establish business contacts, make new friends and to identify needs and serve in the community. Rotarians are overall special as they must be qualified to be a Rotarian, be invited to join Rotary and be approved by the Rotary membership to join. Rotarians must be willing to devote time, share skills and resources for completion of Rotary projects — both local and International.
He challenged the club and fellow Rotarians to set goals “high” and do more in contributions to the community as well as worldwide.”
Moore discussed the Rotary International focus and challenge for 2008-09 to “Make Dreams Real” for the children of the world.
He stated: “With each Rotary Club focusing on health, hunger, literacy and water resources, we can make a difference in the lives of children around the world.”
He acknowledged that focus on the literacy project is close to home. The Ferst Foundation currently reaches 70 percent of eligible children (those under age 5) in Greene and Putnam County.
To make a difference, Rotarians were ask to each ‘personally’ sponsor one child for the 2008-09 year in receiving a book per month. Additionally the Rotary’s upcoming Food Rescue Program, participation in Meals on Wheels in Greene County and assisting in Habitat projects are focused on addressing the health and hunger of children and adults in our market.
For an international focus, the club was acknowledged for the work with Alliance for Smiles and for providing Shelter boxes.
Rotarians honored Moore with a special dessert, prepared by Brian Lord, Chef de Cuisine, Reynolds Landing. As the dessert was being served, follow Rotarians, Margie Eddy-Forbes, Pat Ware, Linda Welde-Fossier and Cecelia Smith serenaded
him with a song especially written for the occasion.
Moore and his wife Irene have been married 26 years. Having joined Rotary in 1996, Gary has served many roles in Rotary to include: District Rotary Foundation Annual Program Fund Chair (2005-07), Assistant Governor (2002- 06), District Chair for Community Assistance Programs (2001-03) and President of the Rotary Club of Rockdale County (2000-01). He was recently appointed to serve on the International level as a member of the Reach Out- to -Africa-Partner Countries Subcommittee for the period May 1, 2008 through June 30, 2010.
Moore earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Georgia and his law degree from Georgia State University College of Law.
