The popular Jubilee Teen Idol competition will make its return to downtown Greensboro next month as part of the 11th annual Southland Jubilee.

The Jubilee Teen Idol was launched at last year’s festival and proved to be a popular addition to the Southland Jubilee. The six finalists took to the festival’s main stage competing for the title.

“We hope to have a large turnout for auditions. It promises to be a fun and exciting time for everyone who participates,” said Greensboro Better Hometown Director Cail Hammons. “The Teen Idol competition was a huge hit at last year’s Jubilee, and we are looking forward to showcasing the lake area’s promising young talent at Southland Jubilee 2009.”

The top finalists will compete for cash prizes.

According to the event’s Web site, the Southland Jubilee began in 1998 and has been well-received in the lake area through its arts and crafts, food and business vendors.

“Since its beginning in 1998, Southland Jubilee has been downtown Greensboro’s premier event and has grown to develop a reputation across the region as a quality heritage arts and family festival. The festival brings thousands of people to our historic commercial district and remains a key tool in Greensboro’s downtown revitalization toolbox. The festival is produced by the city’s Downtown Development office with the goal of exposing people to Downtown Greensboro in hope that they will return to dine, shop, and stroll through our wonderful town on a regular basis,” the Web site states.

Young aspiring area singers ages 12 to 18 in the Lake Oconee area are encouraged to audition for this year’s event. According to a press release, auditions will be held Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Green County Public Service Campus, 1180 C. Weldon Smith Drive in Greensboro. Those wishing to audition must apply online at www.southlandjubilee.com and bring an audition fee of $5. Applications are also available at all local schools, the Chamber of Commerce and the recreation department offices.

According to the press release, all singers will be reviewed by a three-judge panel. Ten finalists will be selected to perform on the festival main stage on Saturday, April 28. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three performers.
