Jerry Devore, Habitat for Humanity in Greene County, recently spoke to the Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties. He spoke to the Rotary Club about the mission statement, goals and objectives for Greene County Habitat for Humanity.
Devore stated: “Our vision is to build lives as well as houses. When a perspective applicant qualifies for a home, the door is open for self esteem and reliance. Each applicant must meet certain qualifications which include: being gainfully employed, have an income that is no more than 60 percent of the average per capital income in Greene County (defined as between $26,000 and $28,000), family must be able to make the monthly mortgage payments and the home owner must put in at least 250 hours of sweat equity. Once an applicant qualifies and takes occupancy of their home, the effect on the children of these families is dramatic. Given the boast of self esteem and reliance, children become more diligent in attending school, overall grade averages improve and some children are able to attend college and obtain degrees — all attributable to being given hope.”
Today 40 percent of Greene County residents live in poverty, another 20 percent live in homes, where the values are less than $20,000, and 1,750 homes are substandard. Habitat for Humanity in Greene County has a mission to build at least two homes per year and ultimately start a Habitat Village in Greensboro to help alleviate this situation. Additionally they are starting a two-year capital campaign to fund building 15 homes in the Greensboro Habitat Village. They will rely on businesses, individuals, the Federal Home Loan Bank and Grants to reach their financial objectives for the Habitat Village.
Devore concluded his comments by adding: “It should be noted that of the 21 homes built to date, no one has defaulted in their mortgage and in fact several of the homeowners have been able to pay their mortgage in full. We are seeking the time, talents and financial support of volunteers and other interested parties. Anyone interested in providing support should call 706- 453-1718. We strive to set the standard, with our Habitat for Humanity, with are objectives and accomplishments, for all other Habitats to be judged. With the help from individuals in our community, we will be able to set this standard and together improve the lives of others.”
