The Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties recently presented a donation to the Oconee Regional Humane Society (ORHS).

On hand to accept the award for ORHS were Diane Kirby, vice chairman and Katherine Calhoun, foster director for the Cat Adoption Program. Additionally Rotarians Linda Pack, who is also chairmen of the board of ORHS and Linda Maples, head of the Grant Writing Committee, were present during the presentation.

ORHS, was founded in 1999 and is a non-profit 501©3 organization that operates in Greene and Putnam Counties. In the eight years of their existence, they have rescued and found homes for over 2500 dogs and cats and have funded more than 5,000 spays and neuters.

Last year, ORHS arranged more than 400 cat and dog adoptions. The animals mostly come from local animal control facilities or owner surrender. They are placed in volunteer foster homes where they are spayed or neutered, brought up to date with inoculations and evaluated as to what sort of home they are best suited for. Each Saturday ORHS volunteers take kittens, puppies and adult animals to adoption day at Pets Supplies Plus in Athens, Georgia. Pets are also available on their Web site (www.orhspets.org) and at other venues throughout the year. Additionally ORHS conducts periodic free/low-cost spay/neuter programs for low income families.

They also join the Greene County Animal Control and Park Place Animal Hospital to sponsor low cost rabies clinics.

To join the Rotary Club in making a contribution, please contact ORHS at 706-454-1508. Additionally you can become a member of ORHS, volunteer for being a foster home or help with adoptions.
