Rain shoots down Cultural Clays event

With virtually all outdoor activity brought to a standstill by last week’s stalled storm system, the 10th annual Cultural Clays Tournament, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, has been rescheduled for this Sunday.

The event will still be held at the Lake Oconee Shooting Club, with registration at 1:30 p.m. and Cocktails and Chow, awards, and a silent auction at 5 p.m.

“We hated to change the date the day before the event,” said Elsie Monk, special events manager at the Cultural Center, “but we had no choice. Many people have paid a premium to participate in the popular fundraiser in support of the Cultural Center, and we want to ensure that they get their money’s worth.”

In making the decision to reschedule the event, many phone calls passed between the Cultural Center and the Lake Oconee Shooting Club. Field conditions as well as equipment considerations were discussed in length before the final decision was jointly made. Ultimately, it came down to making sure that those registered for the tournament be given the absolute best conditions possible for a shooting tournament.

“Rain or shine, we knew everyone would have a good time at the Cocktails and Chow party following the shooting tournament — they always do — but the rain was really going to affect the quality of the tournament,” said Monk.

Space is still available for the Sept. 27 tournament (weather permitting), and new registrants are encouraged to sign up. To register or if you have questions, please visit the Cultural Center Web site at www.mmcc-arts.org or call (706) 342-4743 (877-233-0598 toll-free) and ask for Elsie Monk.
