Fall is just around the corner and it’s time to think about fall color for your landscape, such as fall foliage color.
With tree-planting season near, consider what fall leaf color would accent your home and landscaping. Maple trees have several fall leaf colors. Red Maple, of course, has beautiful red leaf color. Many Japanese maples have red leaf color. Other trees that have red fall foliage are Nuttall Oaks, pin oaks, overcup oaks, and blackgum dogwood. Crape myrtle will have yellow to red leaves. Sugar maples will have yellow to orange fall leaf color. Trident maples tend to have yellow leaf color. Elms can also have yellow leaf color as well as fringe trees, sycamores, tulip poplars, river birches, red duds, Ginkgos, willows and willow oaks.
Shrubs also have great leaf color in the fall. Shrubs that have red fall color are burning bush, barberry, viburnum, cotoneaster, summer blooming spiraea, blueberries, service berry, nandina, and some azaleas will have a red fall leaf. Shrubs with yellow fall color include forsythia, clethra and beauty berry.
Plants with fall leaf color can add great interest to your landscaping, since there only a few plants that bloom in the fall. Fall blooming plants include camellia sasanqua, encore azaleas, knockout roses and some abelia as well.
Remember when planting fall plants to always use a good planting mix and plant with root balls one inch (or higher depending on the plant) above ground level for best results.
Happy gardening.
