Time to plant shrubs and perennials

Cooler weather is arriving but there is still plenty of time to plant shrubs, trees, annuals, perennials and ground covers.
As stated in previous articles, planting in the fall allows the plants roots to grow strong and healthy. Well-established plants will result in a better chance of plant material surviving the heat next summer. When planting, always mix quality soil amendments with existing soil. This will help the root system grow and give you more healthy plants.
There are many types of plant material still available. The following plants are great for sunny areas: Sungold cypress, knockout roses, Abelia, junipers, perennials, Lorapetalum, hollies, encore azalea, Ligustrum, Cleyera, Anise, Elaeagnus, tea olive, Nandina, boxwood, barberry, wax myrtle, leyland cypress, cryptomeria, Arborvitae, blueberries, fruit trees, shade trees, red buds, cherry trees and river birches.
For semi-shade areas, you can use azaleas, Ligustrum, Cleyera, Anise, hollies, viburnum, camellia, sasanqua, hydrangea, pieris, creeping plum yew, boxwood, Elaeagnus, tea olive and most trees.
For shade areas plant azaleas, oak leaf hydrangea, Hosta Lily, Astilbe, ferns, mahonia, Aucuba, yews, cast iron plant, Pieris, Elaeagnus, many types of shade perennials, Vinca Minor, Pachysandra, Mondo Grass, Acorus Grass, Liriope, ivy and Ajuga.
