The First Presbyterian Church of Union Point will once again host the world renowned tenor Sam Hagan in Concert on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. Mr. Hagan will be singing many of your holiday favorites as well as selections of sacred music.
The concert is free and open to the public. Due to limited seating reservations may be made by calling Joyce Heffner (706) 486-4313, the Rev. Stephen Jackson (404) 556-0933 or by calling the Greene County Chamber of Commerce (706) 453-7592.
One of the finest tenors in the Southeast, Hagan did not plan to be a professional singer. Until recently he was a full-time biology and chemistry teacher at Atlanta Metropolitan College. Teaching took a back seat to a busy career as a soloist, not only around his hometown of Atlanta but also around the world.
Hagan has been a featured soloist with some of America’s best orchestras including the Atlanta, Cleveland and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras, the Flagstaff Festival Orchestra and the world-famous Spoleto (Charleston) Festival. He has performed under such noted conductors as James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Skitch Henderson, Louis Lane, and Robert Shaw. He studied with Metropolitan Opera baritone Timothy Nolen, who is also director of Hofstra University’s Opera program in New York. He has performed in England, Canada, Mexico and Italy; where he served as cantor for mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. He twice sang for Pope John Paul II and also at the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter.
Some of his notable opera roles include Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosifan Tutte, Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, Alfredo in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, Rudolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème, Sportin’ Life in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra production and Robbins in the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra production. He sang the title role of Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman. He has performed numerous works of J.S. Bach including the famous Christmas Oratorio, the Passions of St. Matthew and St. John, and numerous works by Handel, including The Messiah and Israel in Egypt.
In Atlanta, Mr. Hagan is a member of The 3 Inspirational Tenors, a popular trio that offers sacred and secular inspiration classics on concert stages, churches and other special occasions. He currently holds the position of staff cantor at St. Jude Catholic Church in Sandy Springs (Atlanta, Georgia)
The Sam Hagan Christmas concert marks the second in a series of programs for the performing arts sponsored by First Presbyterian Church of Union Point. Other programs will be announced in 2010.
