Create more interest in your backyard

Backyards are the main outdoor living area for most people. There is a sense of privacy and comfort there. Many homes have decks, patios or pool areas with sitting areas scattered around the yard, in places such as natural areas, around a fire pit, near a lake, creek or small fishpond with waterfall.
Since backyards are the center of outdoor activities, create more interest there by adding fountains, statuary, rock, wood or brick accent structures and interesting plant material. All these areas will look great when the proper type of plants are used, whether it’s trees, shrubs, bulbs, ground cover, annuals or perennials.
When deciding on what to plant, think about what type of effect you are trying to achieve, formal, natural, Japanese garden, etc. Once you have made your decision, try to incorporate different types of plants so that there will be something to give you color during each season of the year.
Azaleas are a great choice for spring. Knockout roses will bloom in the summer and fall. Hydrangeas start blooming in late spring and will continue into the summer. Rose Creek Abelia blooms in the fall. Camellias and Sasanqua, depending on the variety, will bloom in the fall and winter months. Winter Jasmine and Mahonia both bloom in the winter. Many berry-bearing plants are available that will produce berries during different seasons and are a great addition for color variety in your landscape.
Consider the different types of plants available that can increase the appeal of your back yard. Take time to stroll through the garden center to look for ideas and ask the garden professionals for advice. Bring a picture of the area with you to help in selecting appropriate plant materials. Another choice is to have a landscape designer create a custom plan especially for your property.
Happy gardening.
