Buy a brick for The Plaza
Published 8:00 am Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Many of you probably remember when we sold bricks in 1999 to build the Plaza in Eatonton. Eighteen hundred people bought bricks with names on them and became part of history. The Plaza was completed in 2000 and has been the place for summer street dances, weddings, company parties, family photos, fundraisers for civic groups, community celebrations, picnics and a restful place for many of you to visit. In April 2010, phase two of the Buy a Brick Campaign will begin. The Eatonton-Putnam Arts Foundation and the Eatonton City Council have approved the continuation of the brick walk through the asphalt driveway in front of the Plaza Arts Center. It will connect the Plaza lawn and the Plaza Arts Center. A landing of bricks will be at the end of the walk adjacent to the steps of the Arts Center. Only five hundred bricks will be available for names. Names will not be on the bricks where traffic crosses.
As in 1999, each brick can have two lines with 15 letters and spaces on each line. The bricks will sell for $50 each. The funding from the sale of bricks will pay for the walk and a small brick wall in front of the foundation plants at the Arts Center. The profit will benefit the Arts Center. The Buy a Brick Campaign will take place in April, May and June and the construction will be done in July. Marsha Sichveland, chairperson for the project, expects the bricks to sell quickly. “I would love for the bricks to sell out before June. Many people who didn’t live here in ’99 have already told me they want their names at the Plaza. Others who have added children or grandchildren to their families are equally excited about this opportunity to add new names. Clubs, organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate, too. You can also buy a brick in memory or honor of a loved one. Even if you bought bricks in 1999, this will be another chance to express how much you enjoy and appreciate the Plaza by supporting this project. At the July 24th street dance with Randall Bramlett, we’ll be dancing on the bricks.”
