Denis Pepin, a member of The Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties, is dedicated to the Rotary International philosophy of “unselfish volunteer service.” He serves as co-chairman of the local Rotary Club fundraising activities, acts as community liaison for Rotary and serves on the board of Second Harvest Inc., with a focus on the coordination of volunteers for food pickup and delivery. (Second Harvest Inc. is a food rescue program sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties.)
With all his Rotary work and community service activities, he still finds time to participate in one of his favorite sports activities. Specifically for the last ten years, Denis has traveled with some old teammates from Chicago to the U.S. Senior Men’s Curling Association (USSMCA) National Championships. This event takes place in February of each year, typically in a mid-west venue, such as St. Paul, Minn., Eveleth, Minn., Columbia County, Wis. and Chicago. There are teams from all over the country represented; usually 64 to 96 teams. They are grouped into three divisions: Seniors (55 to 65 years old), Super Seniors (63 to 70 years old and in which Denis participated) and Masters (usually over 70 years old). This year there were 16 teams in the Super Senior division and Denis and his teammates won the National Championship and brought home special trophies and medallions for their efforts!
Denis stated: “this is the only event I curl in every year and I just show up and play…no such thing as practice. My teammates curl from October through April each year…..I am a much better curler than golfer. Clearly my curling heritage stems from playing in Canada for many years before we moved to the states in 1978”.
Congratulations to Denis and his teammates on winning the US Senior Men’s Curling Association National Championship.
