Monday, April 5 saw the first day of the “These Streets Are Made For Walking” campaign at Reynolds Plantation.

This summer from April through November, 22 women, the combined 2006-2009 Dixie Cup teams will walk all 280 streets in Reynolds Plantation, including The Landing, Great Waters and Cherokee Point. They are training for the 14-mile ‘In Their Shoes,’ walk,  an Athens-based fundraiser for breast cancer support which takes place Nov. 20. The Dixie Cups walking team was formed in January 2006 when seven Reynolds Plantation women and a friend from Atlanta joined to do the Susan B. Komen 60 mile three-day walk in October 2006. Their goal was to support all those who have battled breast cancer, raise funds for breast cancer research, and raise awareness. In preparing for this 60-mile walk, these Dixie Cups trained hundreds of miles on Reynolds Plantations streets & walking paths, downtown Greensboro and streets of Madison. Each year since 2006, a team of Dixie Cups have  walked miles for the cure. The combined 2006-2009 Dixie Cup teams can be spotted hitting the streets all this summer and will mark each street completed with a pink ribbon. To make a donation, send a check made out to In Their Shoes to Linda Dudley, 1091 Penfield Way, Greensboro, GA 30642, or you can give it to any Dixie Cup.
