Rock Eagle’s Camp EcoAdventure finished its second successful year as a spring break community environmental education day camp April 5-9, 2010. The camp’s goals are to provide a safe, positive outdoor experience and to promote environmental awareness and conservation for community children ages 6-10. With the help of 4-H volunteers Tammy Sibley, Ciara Evans, and Taylor Wilson and a Walmart Community Grant, Camp EcoAdventure became an affordable experience which allowed 24 campers to attend. Adventures included canoeing; visiting with Rock Eagle’s resident animals; hiking along Rock Eagle trails; discovering life skills of Native Americans and pioneer times; and sampling in Rock Eagle Lake and streams. The week ended with campers creating artwork for the international contest River of Words. Camp EcoAdventure not only exposed children to their local environment, but also provided a means to introduce 4-H to a younger audience. In the words of Hunter Fields, a 2nd grader from Jones County, “Next to ‘Toys’R’Us’, this is the best place!” Dates for next year will be announced at the end of the summer. Each year the Rock Eagle Environmental Education program hosts more than 13,000 students from across the southeast and is dedicated to promoting awareness of our local natural resources.
