Consider a variety of blossoms for summer color

Warm weather brings an abundance of color to the landscape and there are many great plants available for bringing that color to your garden. Trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and ground covers all come in varieties with colorful blossoms.

One of the best trees for color is the Crape Myrtle, which comes in white, pink, red or lavender. They bloom in the summer and bloom longer than almost any other tree. Evergreen Magnolia is another good choice because of their very showy large, white blooms.

Shrubs have many blooming varieties. Some examples of blooming shrubs are Encore Azaleas, Butterfly Bush, Knockout Rose, Abelia, Spiraea, Carpet Rose and Hydrangea. Most of these shrubs come in a variety of colors.

Perennials are very popular since they come back year after year. This is the time of year to plant them and the available selections are best now. Some good perennials choices are Coreopsis, Day Lily, Shasta Daisy, Dianthus, Lantana, Verbina, Iris, Huechera, Hosta Lily, Jacob’s Ladder, Peony, Black-Eyed Susan, Russian Sage, Lavender and Canna Lily.

Annuals give the best and longest blooming times for the entire season. There are many annuals to choose from during this season and the choices are too numerous to list.

Ground covers are another good plant for bringing color into your landscape. One of the best is perennial Verbina, which is available in red or purple bloom color.
