Food pantry fills shelves to feed hungry

Hard working volunteers, George Marts, Jerry Jones, Anthony Roach, Don Steele, Dick Owens and Bill Ball, unloaded a truck recently of canned and frozen food for the Greene County Food Pantry. The Food Pantry receives a delivery once or twice a month and the average order contains 600-800 cases and weighs any where from 8,000 to 10,000 pounds. The product is then transferred to the shelves of the Pantry Distribution Center in preparation for those families who need support the most. The food is purchased, through cash donations, from the Feeding America Food Bank Network at very reasonable prices ( ex: 21 cents for an 18 oz. jar of peanut butter – 18 cents for a can of vegetables or fruit).
While the Food Pantry is able to purchase most needed items through the Network, it doesn’t always have a complete selection and supplemental items are needed. It takes both purchases and food drives to operate the food pantry monthly Those items are often supplied from food drives at local churches, organizations, businesses, communities and individuals.
One of the most needed items is paper bags which are used to distribute the food. An appeal is being made to individuals and organizations for paper bag donations.
The GCFP, located at the Morning Side Apartment Complex, MLK Jr. Dr. in Greensboro, serves ALL of Greene County and is open on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday serving Greene County families that qualify for assistance.
