Summer heat is arriving and now is a good time to mulch around your plants. Mulch will help keep moisture in the ground and reduce the chance of weeds. There several options available for mulch materials. Pine straw is the most commonly used mulch; try to keep it at least two inches deep. Pine bark is another good option. It comes as nuggets, mini-nuggets and mulch. Mini-nuggets are commonly used in flowerbeds. Pine bark mulch has a fine texture. Cypress mulch is good option to use around the house and play areas because it helps keep insects out. Hardwood mulch is great to use almost anywhere in your yard and generally lasts a little longer than other mulches. Mulch is also available in different colors such as black, red and brown. Mulch all your planting beds to help your plants survive the summer heat.

Even though the weather is warming up, it is still a good time to plant shrubs, tree, annuals, perennials, and ground covers. A great way to help them survive and thrive is to prepare the soil properly by using a good soil mix that will help retain moisture. When digging the holes make the hole is twice as wide as the container, then fill the hole with water, and let the water seep into the soil, then put in the plant and fill the hole with the soil mixture. Water the plant and add whatever mulch you choose to keep in moisture. Water the plant as needed until it is well established. Follow these tips to have a successful summer growing season.
