In April, a new coffee, sweets and ice cream store donned in bright green and pink decor opened up shop just next to Spotlight Theatre and Amici in Greensboro.

Oconee Sweet Sensations was opened by area native Sonya Mullins, who has always had an avid love of baking and other such sweet delicacies, and the store aims to offer a little bit of something for everyone.

Offering more than 16 different flavors of ice cream, espresso, coffee, candy, chocolate delicacies and even hot dogs and pretzel dogs, the business aims to garner attention from customers with a large selection of goods.

Mullins, who grew up in a dairy family, said opening up the business was a dream for her own family.

“Well, I’ve always enjoyed baking and I’ve always been in the family business with my family and my husband and I have our own family now so we really wanted to start up our own business.”

The location, she said, just seemed like a perfect opportunity.

“We saw a good opportunity here,” she said.  “We’ve lived here all our lives.  We just really like the atmosphere of the theater and thought it would be a good addition to the theater.”

So far, the most popular thing on the menu include the shop’s large selection of Mayfield Ice Cream, she said, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream has been the biggest seller.

Offering Mayfield Ice Cream at the shop was the business’s way of thinking of local dairy farmers, as many local dairy farmers contribute their milk to Mayfield, she said.

“We chose Mayfield to support the local dairy farmers,” she said.

In addition to hand dipped Mayfield ice cream, the store also serves up chocolate, vanilla or swirl soft serve ice cream, as well as an array of other delectable ice cream treats such as ice cream sundaes, banana splits and floats.

For those without a sweet tooth, the shop also offers black angus hot dogs wrapped in a soft-baked pretzel bread, as well as chili dogs, chili cheese dogs, slaw dogs or even chili cheese slaw dogs.

And for those that have a love of all things coffee, the store also offers espressos, cappuccinos, lattes and even iced coffee beverages.

The shop will hold a grand opening celebration this Saturday, with 10 percent discount to customers and an array of other giveaways and fun activities.

Oconee Sweet Sensations, located at 1100 Parkside Main, is open from Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., Friday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m.
