More than 250 red, white, and blue adorned patriotic citizens expectantly filled The Plantation Point Pavilion Sunday morning, July 4, for the Annual Lake Oconee Community Church Celebration of Freedom. The service, formed and led by Gary W. Arnold, Pastor of Worship and the Arts, began with a reminder of our American heritage and local history with Native American music and prayers which utilized the cherished drum blessed by Chief Winterhawk at the memorial service of Ron Maples a year ago this month.
Also included were words from the Gettysburg Address, familiar music of Americana, moments to remember those lost and those currently serving, as well as the singing of the songs of the Army, Marine Corp, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard, honoring those present who have served our country in the United States Military.
Chairman of Greene County Board of Education, Arlie Collins presented to the congregation the flag flown above the United States Capital in honor of the church’s Greensboro Youth Academy which had just on July 2 come to and end following an incredibly successful four weeks of programming at the Sycamore Apartments in Greensboro.
LOCC is always pleased and proud to have the Greene County High School Junior ROTC participating and presenting the colors for this event.
The cadets in the picture follows from left to right: Cadet/Lt Col Christian Anes (our group commander), Cadet/Captain Kayla Ruff, Cadet/Technical Sergeant Hannah Cowan, C/Technical Sergeant Charles Watts, and Major David Conley.
Mark your calendars, as Dock 103 will air a recording of the event on July 26.
