Hundreds of spectators recently spent a Saturday evening “remembering when” at downtown Greensboro’s Rock ‘n Roll Days Cruise In. Classic, antique, and vintage cars along with hot rods and collectibles lined the streets of downtown.
The event, produced by the Georgia Classic Cruisers Car Club and the Greensboro Better Hometown program, is a downtown favorite each year. Car Club member, John Smith reports that there were more than 100 visiting, and club cars in town on Saturday. Visitors traveled from surrounding towns and even neighboring states to enter cars in the popular Greensboro Cruise In.
Jimmy Britt Chevrolet, Pontiac and Buick of Greensboro sponsored the event and provided 40 trophies to be given as prizes as designated by the Car Club. The dealership also displayed several new vehicles.
Greensboro’s Rock ‘n Roll Cruize-in is known for the wide array of vintage vehicles it draws from across the state. There were an abundance of 60’s-70’s “muscle cars” to include GTOs, Corvettes, Chevelles, and Camaros, plus Ford Mustangs and Chrysler products including Barracudas, Belvederes and Road Runners. Also on display were several ‘55 – ‘59 Chevrolets. There was something for every car enthusiast to enjoy.
Visitors to town enjoyed more than just cars during their time in Greensboro. Shoppers strolled the streets and shopped for art, antiques, home goods and more at our downtown stores. The Yesterday Café was ready for the evening with windows decorated just for the Cruise In and staff dressed for the event in pink ladies jackets and poodle skirts!
On the Court House Lawn stage the Tri-5 All Stars Band performed hits from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s throughout the event. There was dancing in the street, well actually on the courthouse lawn, by young and seasoned visitors.
Visiting and local children crowded in front of the stage for the annual Hula-Hoop contest. The contest ended in a three-way tie for first place! The three winners were: ten-year-old Gracie Cotton of Loganville, ten-year-old Alli Murphy of Greensboro and ten-year-old Danielle Brock of Covington. Nine-year-old Aaron Andrews of Milledgeville was the lone winner for second place. Nine-year-old Micah Brown and five-year-old Emma Cooper tied for third place. All six winners received a certificate and some infamous “Greensboro Bucks” to spend in downtown Greensboro!
The Cruise-In is part of the 2010 Greensboro Saturday’s Series that features a unique downtown event each month. Next up in downtown will be Downtown Trick-or-Treat from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.
