Now that temperatures are cooler, the leaves are beginning to take on their brilliant fall colors. Consider adding plants with fall color to your landscape. There are many trees with great leaf color available, such as Maples, Oaks, Elms, Crape Myrtles, Red Buds, Dogwoods, Japanese Maples, Zelkova, River Birch and Chase Tree to name a few. Their leaf colors range from yellows, to reds and oranges depending on the type of tree. Many shrubs have beautiful fall colors like Itea, which has a brilliant red fall leaf color and blooms in the spring, and Nandina turns red. Viburnum, Forsythia, Cleyera, Lorapetalum, Hydrangeas, some Azaleas and Spiraea also have a nice fall leaf color.
There are also plants that flower during the cool season. Knockout Roses bloom until cold weather arrives. Lorapetalum show some color and Abelia are blooming with white or pink blossoms. Camellia Sasanqua bloom from fall into early winter depending on the variety. They are available in many bloom colors and sizes.
Many plants have berries that will bring color into your fall landscape. Beauty Berry has purple berries. Many varieties of Hollies and Pyracantha will have berries also.
Do not forget about seasonal color plants like Pansies, Violas, Snapdragons, ornamental Cabbage and Kale, Mustard and Chard when adding color to your cool weather landscape.
Happy Gardening.
