There are many ways to create a great holiday appearance in your yard. You can add berry-bearing plants such as Fosteri Holly, Dodd’s Cranberry Holly, Nellie Stevens Holly and Greenleaf Holly, all of which would make great corner or accent plants.
Their red berries add much to the holiday appeal. Some examples of lower-growing shrubs with red berries are Dwarf Burfordi Holly, Needle Point Holly and Nandina. Many of these plants look great with lights strung on them since the lights accent the berries’ appearance.
Hollies have long been associated with holiday décor and color. Many people like to add branches and berries to wreaths, garland, centerpieces and other holiday decorations.
Another red berry plant is Pyracantha that is great for use on walls and fences. If you want flowering plants for the holidays consider Camellia Sasanqua, especially the Yuletide Sasanqua that has red flowers with yellow centers. There are other colors including white, pink and red. Depending on the temperatures, Knockout Roses have been known to bloom until Christmas.
You may want to install plants that have a Christmas tree appearance such as Spruces, different varieties of Pines, Arborvitae, Leyland Cypress, Cryptomeria, Deodora Cedar and upright growing Hollies for example. These plants look great strung with lights for the holidays and will add style to your landscape throughout the year. With the right plants, it is easy to bring a festive holiday appearance to your landscape.
Happy Gardening.
