STMA to offer basket weaving

Basket weaving, one of the world’s oldest and most popular crafts, traditionally uses reed and cane for the basket’s construction. But at the next STMA Arts Outreach Family Workshop, Basket Weaving with a “Twist,” scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to noon, you can learn how to make one using yarn, fiber strips and ribbon. The baskets can then be embellished with a variety of decorative items including beads, buttons and shells.

According to workshop instructor, Toni Carlucci, “This technique is great fun for people of all ages, especially kids. It’s a wonderfully simple, colorful and rewarding project.” The baskets will be round in shape with a handle. “They’re sturdy enough to carry a number of items, and make for lovely centerpieces and Easter baskets,” Toni added.

Professional artist and teacher, Toni holds a Masters Degree in fabric design and weaving from the University of Georgia. She teaches at the Linden House Art Center in Athens and works on outreach programs for the Georgia Museum of Art. Her expertise includes painting, felt making and fabric related projects.

Admission for the STMA workshop is $10 adults, $8 children; STMA members receive a $2 discount. Those in financial need may attend free of charge. Registration is required. Please call (706) 342-7557.
