Southland Jubilee a success despite weather threats

Clouds loomed and winds blew, but nothing could stop Southland Jubilee from another successful year in downtown Greensboro.
More than 7,000 people contributed to this year’s festival as vendors, volunteers, merchants and participants.
“It all came together beautifully,” said Barbara Twilley, Better Hometown Greensboro Program Assistant. “We were so thankful the weather was not a problem so our vendors and festival-goers could come to such an anticipated event.”
The afternoon brought warm rays of sunshine and strong cooling winds keeping a pleasant temperature for all to enjoy.
The streets were packed with tents offering a little bit of everything from handcrafted journals, homemade soaps, oil paintings, specialty furniture, children’s dress up clothes and jewelry.
The crowds arrived in full force around lunch time as food vendors filled the downtown area with different tempting aromas of barbecue, corndogs, french fries and, of course, funnel cakes to name a few.
As live entertainment wooed audiences resting on hay bales, children enjoyed the different activities brought especially for their entertainment. The moonwalk, bungee jump and clear, human size “hamster balls” which allowed kids to “walk on water” were especially popular.
The agricultural section brought baby chicks, miniature animals, peanut and beef displays and impressive antique tractors for display.
All of South Main Street was filled with spotless cars of every color, make and year accompanied by oldies music picked especially for the show.
Without the support of loyal volunteers, Steering Committee members and the backing of festival sponsors, the 13th annual Southland Jubilee would never been possible.
Now that Southland Jubilee 2011 has passed, it is time to look forward to 2012.
