The Whistlin’ Dixies broke three years of domination by the Dixie Chicks to capture the 2011 Dixie Cup trophy.  After three days of competition it came down to the last hole of the last match to determine the winners.

Kathryn Handlan, captain of the  Whistlin’ Dixies graciously accepted the trophy on behalf of her teammates  Susan Blanton, Susan Davidson, Jeanne Moser, Terry Pero,  Janice Sharp and  Julie von Haam.  Said Handlan, “This unique trophy will return to its place of honor in our game room bar.”

Losing captain, Elaine Thillen, praised her team for making up ground after a devastating first day of competition.  Elaine along with Judy Blanchat, Marti Davey, Pat Hone, Judy Rosensteel, Pat Ware and Mary Wojnas made up the Dixie Chicks team.

The inaugural Dixie Cup was held in 2000. The match play format is similar to the Ryder Cup with alternate shot, fourball and singles matches. In the twelve years of rivalry the Dixie Chicks have won five times and the Whistlin’ Dixies have won six times. There was a tie in 2006.

Julie von Haam has played in the Dixie Cup since moving to Reynolds Plantation full time ten years ago. “We have created wonderful friendships and a great history over the years with traditions such as the post-tournament Marti-party.  To say that we look forward to this annual event is an understatement.”
