Lake Oconee Fishing Forecast for August 31, 2011
Published 10:48 am Wednesday, August 31, 2011
Lake Level – The main lake is clear with some stain up the rivers.
Lake Temperature – The surface water temperature is 90 degrees. Fishing will remain TOUGH until we get relief from the heat.
Largemouth Bass – FAIR. The fish continue in their late summer pattern and fishing is tough. Anglers should throw topwater baits (Pop-R, buzzbait, and Trick worm) during the first 2-3 hours of daylight to pick up a possible good fish before the sun is out bright. Once the sun is out brightly, you might pick up a fish working deeper docks with jigs or soft plastics. The best action will likely come in deeper water where anglers should fish main lake/creek points, ledges and humps with a Carolina rigged plastic or a crankbait (Deep Little N, DD-14, DD-22, Poe’s 400). These deeper fish are in depths ranging from 8-27 feet and present the best opportunity for anglers to catch fish now especially when water current is present. The heat continues to keep many anglers off the water.
Crappie – FAIR. The crappie are in underwater treetops and brushpiles where they will stay for the remainderof the summer. Use minnows and jigs to catch those fish.
Hybrid Bass/Striped/White Bass – POOR/FAIR. The hot weather and water has slowed the bite as the fish are constantly moving in search of cooler water.
Catfish – GOOD. Catfish are now on the lake’s river/creek channels, ledges, and deep points. Best bait is small bream or bream heads for larger fish. Shrimp and shad are good baits.
