GCHS students partner with Second Harvest

Greene County High School students have become an integral part of the third Saturday food distribution of Second Harvest. Students from many different grades and groups participate. Many of the students who helped with the August distribution were from ROTC, JROTC, Beta Class and the Greensboro Dreamers (chapter of the national “I have a dream Foundation” and is sponsored by Greensboro’s own Tom and Kathy Kelly).
Often students are fulfilling a curriculum requirement for community service—at other times a teacher will organize a class volunteer effort to ‘give back to the community’. For the ROTC students, it is a compliment to their leadership lessons. Members of the GCHS faculty are often on hand to oversee the efforts of their students and lend a hand to the distribution efforts. ROTC Sergeant Joe Miley, and Verley Sue Dotson, Media Specialists were among the faculty members who assisted during the August distribution. In preparation for the August program students helped to bag fresh corn for participants and staged food for an orderly distribution to participants. At the start of the food distribution, students are assigned a grocery cart and then assist the participants with obtaining their food items, and taking the cart to their car. At the end of the distribution, some students work side by side with other Second Harvest volunteers to ‘clean up’ and work with Mr. Tommy (member of GCHS facilities staff) to insure the school is ready for the next day of school.
Second Harvest, Inc. is a 501c3 food rescue and distribution program which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam County. Anyone can contribute to Second Harvest by volunteering, providing financial support or bringing leftovers (n plastic containers or baggies) to Classic Wines or the Fire Station on Carey Station road.
