George Heiring of Eatonton has been awarded the Anderson Social Poetry Prize, the top award offered by the Georgia Poetry Society in its annual competiton. Heiring will receive $500 for his winning entry, “Recycled Justice,” which are his observations of prisoners working along the roadside.
“When I received word of the Anderson Prize, I felt very honored,” Heiring said. “The Georgia Poetry Society encompasses a number of nationally renowned, award winning poets, and it’s a privilege to be in their number.”
Heiring’s writing appears regularly in national and regional publications. His recent book, The Seasonal Heart, features his short stories and poems in celebration of the holiday and winter season. It includes 28 original paintings and drawings created by Gail Vail and eight other celebrated regional artists.
“With the Anderson award and the great response to our book, Christmas came a little early this year,” Heiring said. “Reader reaction to our book has been terrific, and sales are very encouraging. I think people appreciate stories that are uplifting and fun, and the book has been something the entire family can enjoy. The art is exceptional and adds to the books appeal as a Christmas gift.”
On Saturday, Dec. 10, Heiring and Gail Vail will personalize books from 9 a.m. to noon at Spillin’ the Beans Coffee House at 646 Old Phoenix Road (south of Highway 44). The Seasonal Heart is also available at many Oconee Lake area gift shops.
