Three legs work just fine for Zac Brown

Have you met Zac Brown? He is a very special dog, named after a local celebrity and an all around good guy. Our Zac is also an all around good guy with a sad story, but one we hope will have a very happy ending.
It was a Friday afternoon when this little terrier weighing in at all of 10 lbs was spotted in animal control, friendly and wagging his whole body, but there was something wrong with his leg. His rear leg dangled limply from his hip. He had been shot and was being held to see if anyone would claim him. How anyone could shoot this tiny guy is beyond belief. He surely was suffering, and to think of him there for even one more night seemed intolerable, so one of our volunteers called Bonnie Stewart to get her OK to bring him to see the vets at Park Place Animal Hospital for evaluation.
There we received not such great news. After looking at the x-rays, it seemed the bullet went right through the flesh of one leg, and into the other leg shattering the bone, leaving shards of bone around the wound. This little boy must have been in some kind of pain, but he sure didn’t show it. He was more interested in getting his share of lovin’ than anything else. He just smiled and wagged in the arms of whoever held him. What a great spirit he had!
What to do from there? Well, after meeting Zac, no one could possibly doubt Bonnie Stewart’s decision to go along with Dr. Prichard’s recommendation to amputate the leg and save this sweet dog’s life. He was immediately put on an antibiotic and given medication for pain, and he would spend the weekend at Park Place awaiting his surgery the following Monday. Dr. Prichard generously offered to donate their services for the surgery. She felt certain he’d live a good life with only three legs.
The good news is that one week post surgery, Zac was recovering with his foster family and being showered with love. He had a handful of foster brothers and sisters to help him along, and while he’s still tired and very thin, he’s obviously thriving on the love he’s receiving. Nothing brings this little guy down and he doesn’t act like having only three legs is a big deal at all.
We knew we would still have to do some special fundraising for Zac Brown, but we also knew anyone who saw him would fall in love and want him to have a chance to live a long life. Our little trooper is now ready for adoption and deserves the very best forever home. We know we made the right decision for this special boy. Who knows- maybe he’ll even get to meet his namesake some day!
