Greensboro gets ready to flip the switch for the holidays

The search has begun to find the perfect tree to help downtown Greensboro celebrate the holiday season.
North Main Street Greensboro will ‘flip the switch’ Nov. 30 beginning at 6 p.m. to light the big tree located on the courthouse lawn. The tree will be donated by a community member and sit on the courthouse lawn Nov. 30 until Christmas Day.
In the spirit of the tree lighting, downtown stores will stay open late providing a perfect opportunity to shop early for the holidays.
“The streets will be decorated with hundreds of twinkling lights from their shops,” said Greensboro Better Hometown Event Coordinator Kendrick Harris. “Shops here go all out for the tree lighting ceremony from decorations to entertainment.”
The event offers activities for the whole family. There will be live performances through local choirs. Performers include Lake Oconee Academy Band, Gene Yaws and the Eatonton Harmonettes. Greene County High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) will do its famous marshmallow roast by campfire in the streets of Greensboro. There will also be an old-fashioned hayride through town as your favorite holiday tunes will be sung around the tree. Santa will be available for pictures with the kids throughout the event.
Greensboro will also unveil its newest city park, Festival Walk. The unveiling of the new addition to downtown Greensboro will be from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by the Downtown Tree Lighting. Festival Walk is a pedestrian friendly green space bordering Festival Hall, Greensboro’s performing arts center. Funded by private donations, Festival Walk is expected to be a beautiful addition to the community.
“Folks will delight in hearing the historic school house bell ring and donors can search for commemorative bricks along the shady walk,” Harris said.
