The Eatonton Harmonettes are hosting two open houses for any ladies that love to sing. The first night is April 18 at Liberty Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. with light refreshments after and the second one is on April 25 at Lakeside Church from 7 to 9 p.m. The chorus is seeking more ladies to get on board to learn these wonderful old 1940s tunes in four-part harmony such as “Don’t Sit under the Apple Tree,” “Orange Colored Sky,” “Sentimental Journey” and many other memorable tunes made popular during the “Greatest Generation.” The Harmonettes are also on Facebook under the Eatonton Harmonettes. The recently formed Georgia Writers Museum group is holding its first Creative Writing Contest this spring. Some general guidelines for the contest are that entries can be short stories, flash prose, essays or memoirs of 750 words. No poetry will be accepted. Entries shall be original unpublished works. The contest is open to adults 18 years of age and older. The entry fee is $20 per submission. There will be a number of judges reviewing the work. The Greensboro Writers Guild is helping the efforts of organizing the Amateur Writers Contest.

Awards will be presented at a reception for writers and family on June 21. The first place prize will be awarded $125 cash. The winner will be interviewed by Lake Oconee Living Magazine. The interview and winning entry will be printed in the magazine in its Fall 2013 issue. The second place prize is $75 cash, and the third place award is $50 cash.

The 15^th annual Greene County Pro Rodeo will take place at the Greene County Ag Center on C. Weldon Smith Drive at 8 p.m. There will be concessions to eat and bull riding, barrel racing, saddle bronc and bareback riding, calf, team and break away roping, steer wrestling and rodeo clown antics to watch. Free admission for ages four and younger; five to 12, $5; 13 and up, $10.

 

April 27

The LifeSource Food Distribution Program will take place at 10 a.m. in the Putnam County Elementary School Gym. Any disabled resident who has already registered and would like to designate someone to get his or her food distribution must give that person a signed authorization to do so. Putnam General Hospital will provide nutrition education and counseling. DFCS will provide assistance applications and answer questions. ORHS representatives will provide pet food and signups for spaying/neutering services. FERST Foundation for Childhood Literacy will provide free books/signups.

 

Savor a Saturday Night, the major annual fundraising event for The Pete Nance Boys & Girls Club of Greene County, is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Dinner, silent auction and a lively concert will be staged in the Grand Ballroom of the Ritz Carlton Lodge on Lake Oconee. Returning this year to perform are local and Atlanta concert favorites, Banks and Shane.

The event’s silent auction will include fantastic vacation packages, as well as the art of Henry Barnes, David Siffert and Pricilla Smith. Special features of the auction will be a selection of Trace Adkins memorabilia: A guitar, Stetson hat and concert poster, all signed by the country music star-plus other Trace Adkins articles. May 2

One hundred years after thousands of women converged on Washington to unite in their desire for equal rights in voting, the Madison Artists Guild is hosting their newest XLG Show, Woman, which opens at Town 220 Restaurant and Gallery, 220 W. Washington St., Madison. Patrons and community members can meet the artists and enjoy a wine reception between 6 and 8 p.m.

Eight renowned contemporary artists — Katie Brick, Jill Brody, Kristin Casaletto, Abner Cope, Patrick McGannon, Richard Olsen, Betti Pettinati-Longinotti and Jean Westmacott — employ a variety of techniques including painting, print making, photography and sculpture, presenting their unique and personal perspectives to diversify and enrich the central focus of Woman.

From 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. a WaterFront Wakeboard Event on Lake Oconee will take place at the WaterFront Marina, 121 Collis Marina Road, Eatonton. There will be a boat show, kid’s inflatables, luxury lakefront condo tours and more.

 

May 5

Amputee Prosthetic Clinic, a leader in prosthetic care in central and southern Georgia will host a free Adaptive Scuba Clinic from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Divers Supply, located at 5208 Mercer University Drive in Macon. First Dive Intro to Scuba is geared towards anyone with a physical challenge to discover the freedom that scuba offers. First Dive is a program of the Orthotic & Prosthetic Activities Foundation (OPAF), which offers a variety of adaptive recreation opportunities. Adaptive scuba instruction will be overseen by Stacey Minton, Scuba Schools International Instructor Certifier in adaptive scuba and assisted by the staff of Divers Supply with their equipment.

The three-hour clinic will give everyone the chance to try scuba and see if it might be a sport that they would like to continue to pursue. May 11

The Rock Hawk Talk, a historically inspired cruise on Lake Oconee, will take place. Local historian Larry Moore and Georgia Power Lake Resources Manager Scott Hendricks (for Sinclair and Oconee) will once again explore the archeological sites and culture of Lake Oconee including some of the mysterious 3,000 archaeological sites hidden by the lake, prehistoric ceremonial sites, early historical plantations, as well as Wallace Dam, the Oconee Wildlife Management Area and the general Oconee Valley area.

The Rock Hawk Talk Cruise will hold two tour times, both on May 11. The first tour will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and the second tour will be from 4 to 6 p.m.

Rock Hawk Talk fundraiser tickets are $50 and are on sale now. Tickets will include hors d’oeuvres and one drink ticket, a cash bar is also available. There will be history mystery prizes, Oconee Valley history/archaeology books and a raffle for hand-carved Rock Hawk walking sticks and other items. Only 40 tickets will be sold on a first come/first serve basis.

 

Lake Oconee Elks Lodge #2849 will host its annual Car Show. The event will be held in the spacious Lodge parking lot at 1116 Greensboro Road, Eatonton, next to the old Sears location. The spacious lot will be host to more than 100 rare and vintage cars. If you wish to show your car there is a $20 pre-registration fee and $25 the day of the event. There will be over 20 prizes to participants and dozens of door prizes for everyone. The grand prize is three days and two nights in Biloxi Mississippi.
