The recently formed Georgia Writers Museum group is holding its first Creative Writing Contest this spring. Some general guidelines for the contest are that entries can be short stories, flash prose, essays or memoirs of 750 words. No poetry will be accepted. Entries shall be original unpublished works. The contest is open to adults 18 years of age and older. The entry fee is $20 per submission. There will be a number of judges reviewing the work. The Greensboro Writers Guild is helping the efforts of organizing the Amateur Writers Contest.
Awards will be presented at a reception for writers and family on June 21. The first place prize will be awarded $125 cash. The winner will be interviewed by Lake Oconee Living Magazine. The interview and winning entry will be printed in the magazine in its Fall 2013 issue. The second place prize is $75 cash, and the third place award is $50 cash.

The Lake Oconee Bible Bee is excited to announce the beginning of the 5th Bible Bee season. Family registration runs from April 1 through May 31, and study materials will be released on June 1. Every registered young person will receive a Bible, Scripture memory cards, inductive Bible study curriculum, a T-shirt and more. The Lake Oconee Bible Bee will be holding monthly fun family activities in preparation for the local contest, which will be held on August 24 at Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church.
The competition challenges youth from ages seven to 18 years in Bible knowledge and memorization first at local contests held around the country at the end of August, and then at a National Competition held in November for the top 300 contestants from across the nation. The winners of the National Bible Bee Competition earn $260,000 in cash prizes, as well as other awards.

Lake Oconee Elks Lodge #2849 is having a Memorial Day Barbecue May 25 in the old Sears Parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Plates include barbecue, beans, slaw and bread for $8.
The LifeSource Food Distribution Program will take place at 10 a.m. in the Putnam County Elementary School Gym. Any disabled resident who has already registered and would like to designate someone to get his or her food distribution must give that person a signed authorization to do so. Putnam General Hospital will provide nutrition education and counseling. DFCS will provide assistance applications and answer questions. ORHS representatives will provide pet food and signups for spaying/neutering services. FERST Foundation for Childhood Literacy will provide free books/signups.

Opening day for the Greene County Library Vacation Reading Club is Tuesday, May 28. Be there by 2 p.m. to see the amazing Magician, Ken Scott. Children should come early to register the books they’ve read so far this summer. Remember, there will be awards and prizes for the most books read at the end of the program.

Lake Oconee Dentistry will host a free dental care event in association with Dentistry from the Heart at its office located at 1011 Parkside Main, between the Publix parking lot and Spotlight Theatres, in Greensboro.
Drs. David and Patti Bradley will be joined by their associate Dr. Phil Boswell, as well as Dr. David Miller, a local oral surgeon, to provide free extractions, fillings or cleanings. Lake Oconee Dentistry hygienists, dental assistants and other staff members will be donating their time and resources in order to provide free dental care to as many people as possible that day.
Doctors and volunteers will treat the first 100 patients, and possibly more if time allows that day. Treatment will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Event registration will begin at 7 a.m. and patients will be seen through 5 p.m. Patients must be at least 12 years of age to be seen and accompanied by a parent or guardian if under the age of 18. Patients are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and to bring chairs, water, snacks, etc. as they wait outside for their turn. Community volunteers and other local groups, including Lakeside Church, St. Vincent de Paul and Goodwill Industries, will also be on hand to assist that day.

The Putnam County Republican Party will host a Meet ‘n Greet between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at 108 W. Marion St., Eatonton, during the Putnam County Dairy Festival.
The Eatonton Elks will be holding a Blue Devil Class Reunion. The cost is $10 per person and will take place from 5 p.m. to midnight. Dinner is availiable from 5 to 8 p.m. and will include: steak, chicken and shrimp. The entertainment will be 50s and 60s music provided by DJ “Rowdy” Ron starting at 8.
The 2nd Annual Pet Fest and Paw Wash benefiting the Morgan County Humane Society will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Lion’s Club Fairgrounds, 1240 Lion’s Club Road, Madison. Come out and enjoy vendors, music, demonstrations, food and more. See exotic snakes live. Listen to the rhythmic beats of Big Ernie, DJ and percussionist, from Rogers Entertainment. Entry is free. Bring your furry family member to frolic with all the festival fun. Children are sure to love the family fun zone where they can play games and get their face painted. Tickets are two for $1. Have a dog with an unusual talent or spectacular trick? Do you own the cutest dog in the world? Have your furry family member entered in one of the contests that include Best Trick, Most Like Owner, Most Obedient and Best Costume. Each contest entry is only $1. Get your dog washed for $10. Remember that all proceeds help support the numerous animals looking for homes at the adoption shelter.
