Lake Oconee Fishing Forecast, Sept. 5, 2013
Published 7:37 am Thursday, September 5, 2013
Lake Conditions – The lake is stained from recent rains and all the Labor Day boat traffic but conditions should begin to improve.
Lake Water Temperature – 84 degrees.
Largemouth Bass – FAIR/Good – The recent cooler weather dropped the water temperature a few degrees and the shallow water bite improved almost immediately. Fish can now be found shallow, deep and all areas in between. Hot weather has returned so that might reverse things quickly. A shallow bite has occurred on topwater baits and shallow running crankbaits. Much of the action can still found away from the bank and in slightly deeper water on the main lake points, ledges and humps in water depths of 8-17 foot. Deeper running crankbaits and Carolina rigged plastics continue to take fish in those areas.
Crappie –GOOD –The crappie are in the lake’s underwater trees where they are biting both jigs and minnows. Find a good tree with fish and drop the jig or minnow straight down for the bite. Good fishing in the treetops will remain steady throughout the remainder of the summer and into the late fall. The fish will be located from 10-17 feet deep in the trees.
Striped/Hybrid Bass/White – POOR – Early and late in the day some fish continue surface feeding anywhere from the Highway 44 Bridge to the dam. Use a popping cork rig or a small Rat-L-Trap for the schooling fish.
Catfish – GOOD – The catfish are located in the main lake, larger coves and creeks. Early and late in the day will find the catfish most active. Cut baits of shad and bream or live shad and live bream are the best baits for larger channel, blues and flathead catfish.
