If you like learning from a laid-back artist, then you’ll love taking the Acrylic Painting Class from Rick Espelage. Students will learn the fundamentals of painting in this medium on two Saturdays, Sept. 14 and 21, from 10 a.m. – noon in the arts classroom of the Plaza Arts Center from a patient and experienced teacher. Rick has won prizes in the Fine Art Show at the Plaza each year he has participated.
Speaking of laid-back, come join the Stitchery Group on Wednesday afternoons from 4 – 5:30 p.m. The group is no charge and friendly. Just bring whatever you are working on, or mending, and join the conversation and laughter. There is usually someone there to help you with a knitting, crochet or embroidery problem.
Want to learn a quick, easy craft that makes a fashion statement? Attend the Ladder Ribbon Necklace Making Class, Sunday Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. You will take home a jewel-toned necklace in a color you choose made of special ladder ribbon. Friends won’t believe you made it. Think about great, inexpensive gifts for Christmas.
Pottery classes are in the works for children after school and adults in the evening some time in October. Check the website, www.theplazaartscenter.com, for further information.
Future plans into 2014 include getting messy. A Paper Making and Valentine Card workshop, Basket Weaving and Making Gourd Bird Houses workshops are planned for the winter and spring months.
Continuing are Yoga, Friday mornings 9-10 a.m., and Pilates, Tuesdays 5:30-6:30 p.m. Both are gentle classes intended to build core muscle strength, balance and flexibility. Heidi Mede and Elaine Calhoon teach them respectively, both are respected instructors in their areas.
The annual Fine Art Contest and Show has been moved from its former time in February to May to allow artists more time to complete the wonderful work they submit.
The Plaza Arts Center is located at 305 N. Madison Ave. If you have suggestions for classes or would like to teach a class contact 706-923-1655.
