Plant sale to prepare gardeners for fall and winter

- On Sept. 20-21 find the perfect plant for your foliage needs at the Morgan County Master Gardener’s plant sale.
Morgan County Master Gardeners hold their plant sale in the fall and there are several good reasons. Fall is the ideal time to get the beautiful pass-along plants that you will find there into the ground.
Whether you decide on spring-blooming bulbs, perennials, trees or shrubs, the cooler air temperature of fall is easier on the plant, and the warm soil allows roots to continue to grow until the ground freezes, making for a good root system.
The weather is nicer to enjoy your work, the ground is better for the roots and you often have more rain, making watering less necessary. Fertilizer is neither needed nor desired since it would promote tender growth that may be harmed by winter cold. Those spring-blooming bulbs need some cold dormancy for blooming, so now is the time to prepare for their spring beauty.
Come by the Morgan County Cooperative Extension Office in Madison at 440 Hancock Street just down from the Court House to find the plants you will love. Master Gardeners have worked for months potting up their pass-along specialties, and also have a variety of hand made yard art to accent your garden. Drop by Sept. 20-21 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for gardening fun, answers to horticultural questions, composting ideas and lots of plants.
