Lake Oconee Fishing Forecast, Oct. 17, 2013

Lake Conditions – The Lake is stained up the rivers and lightly stained in the remainder of the lake.

Lake Water Temperature – 74-75 degrees.

Largemouth Bass – GOOD – The fish are moving into shallow water to feed as water temperatures have dropped. Look for the topwater bite to improve almost on a daily basis now. The shallow bite will only get better as the water temperature continues to drop. Some fish are staging on the points and moving in around grass and docks.  Zoom trick worms, plastic frogs, topwater plugs, small crankbaits, spinnerbaits and Shaky head plastics will all catch fish. Most of the fish will soon be in shallow water but a few fish can still be found in slightly deeper water locations like humps and will hit deep crankbaits and Carolina rigged plastics. Main lake points are a good place to try now and you might want to give the Alabama rig a try on those points.

Crappie –GOOD –The crappie remain in the lake’s underwater trees where they are biting both jigs and minnows but they are somewhat shallower in the trees now. They will soon be staging in the mouths of major creeks and moving into the creeks where trolling jigs and minnows will be your best option. The crappie are moving to those same locations where they were caught in the spring during their annual spawn.

Hybrid/Striped/White Bass – FAIR – Some fish are being caught using spoons and live shad around humps and ledges with the river bend area being the best spot right now. However the action is slow. Action should begin to improve with cooler water temperatures.

Catfish – GOOD – The catfish are located in the larger coves and creeks as they move in to feed on shad. Cut baits of shad and bream or live shad and live bream are the best for larger channel, blues and flathead catfish. As the water temperature drops look for the fish to move into shallower locations to feed.
