First Call Pregnancy Center presents movie night

Published 1:45 pm Thursday, October 24, 2013

Mark your calendars for Nov. 16 at 7 p.m., as Greene County’s own Gene Yaws will be performing an assortment of iconic motion picture scores on-stage at Grace Fellowship Church in Greensboro. Yaws, who serves as House Manger and Managing Artistic Director for Festival Hall, will be performing with a live band (including strings) and corresponding movie clips, in this annual November fundraiser hosted by the First Call Pregnancy Center.

The evening will embrace a classic movie theme, which, of course, will include Yaws’ performance of well-known movie songs, but the evening will also entail sweet and salty “movie” treats, including “Reese’s” peanut butter and chocolate mini parfaits and tiny delectable cupcakes with rich caramel icing: “Sugar Babies!” Of course, the smell of hot buttered popcorn will greet you at the door; with varieties also including cheese popcorn and almond bark popcorn.

The First Call Pregnancy Center will also hold its second annual “Silent Auction” with numerous desirable donations prior to the musical performance. Credit Cards will be accepted.

There will be reserved seating at no charge. Please contact Margaret Keck at 706-453-1908 to make your reservation soon, as seats will be limited. There will be a request for donations for to support the continued programs offered to women in the community who find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy. First Call is a 501(c)3 and is registered as a Charitable Organization with the State of Georgia. The facility serves women from any background regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, age or marital status.

First Call Pregnancy Center has been open and serving women in Greene and surrounding counties since August of 2005. The facility has had more than 5,000 visits to its location on North Walnut Street in Greensboro. This past year, 32 babies were born to clients of the First Call Pregnancy Center. The organization proposes and offers, through education and services, positive choices for women challenged by a pregnancy. Services are offered free of charge, are non-judgmental and confidential.

If a woman chooses to continue her pregnancy she is enrolled in the organization’s parenting program, “Earn While You Learn”, to educate her on what to expect during the course of her pregnancy and to prepare her for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. The participant earns coupons for attending these classes, doing her homework and participating in additional classes offered. These coupons, “Mommy Money”, may be used in the facility’s Baby Store to purchase needed items for her child.

First Call is able to meet baby needs from diapers and wipes to cribs and car seats. Most clothing and other baby items are in gently used condition and chosen each week as the mother “shops” for her child. Many moms continue with the services until their babies are a year old, which allows First Call to continue with lessons and encourage healthy and positive behaviors.
