The recently formed Georgia Writers Museum group is holding its first Creative Writing Contest this spring. Some general guidelines for the contest are that entries can be short stories, flash prose, essays or memoirs of 750 words. No poetry will be accepted. Entries shall be original unpublished works. The contest is open to adults 18 years of age and older. The entry fee is $20 per submission. There will be a number of judges reviewing the work. The Greensboro Writers Guild is helping the efforts of organizing the Amateur Writers Contest.
Awards will be presented at a reception for writers and family on June 21. The first place prize will be awarded $125 cash. The winner will be interviewed by Lake Oconee Living Magazine. The interview and winning entry will be printed in the magazine in its Fall 2013 issue. The second place prize is $75 cash, and the third place award is $50 cash.

The Lake Oconee Bible Bee is excited to announce the beginning of the 5th Bible Bee season. Family registration runs from April 1 through May 31, and study materials will be released on June 1. Every registered young person will receive a Bible, Scripture memory cards, inductive Bible study curriculum, a T-shirt and more. The Lake Oconee Bible Bee will be holding monthly fun family activities in preparation for the local contest, which will be held on August 24 at Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church.
The competition challenges youth from ages seven to 18 years in Bible knowledge and memorization first at local contests held around the country at the end of August, and then at a National Competition held in November for the top 300 contestants from across the nation. The winners of the National Bible Bee Competition earn $260,000 in cash prizes, as well as other awards.

The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art, 4200 Bethany Road, Buckhead, is inviting 25 imaginative and energetic children to take part in an Expanded Workshop on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Come have great fun with the costumed characters of Alice in Wonderland: Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the March Hare and others. Be sure to bring a sack lunch to eat at the tea party. Children will learn about acting, prop making and costumes in order to put on a show. Reservations are required so call Pam at 706-342-7557.
Just around the corner is Union Point, a wealth of history. Wisteria Cemetery was a part of the James Brooks Hart plantation. Today Wisteria Cemetery is the site for a Living History Event, Wayside Ladies Speak. Come and hear the stories of the women that sacrificed so much for the wounded soldiers of the Confederacy as they stand by their graves and tell their stories. Do not miss Rock Eagle 4-H Center’s stellar Saturday at the Rock program for the month of May. Rock Eagle is thrilled to host guest presenters from the Charlie Elliott branch of the Atlanta Astronomy Club; one of the largest organizations of recreational astronomers in the southeastern United States. There will be a short presentation about the sun and how it is studied, followed by guided observation. Presenters are NASA trained as a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador. Using white light and H-alpha telescopes, participants will examine the structure of the sun’s surface, including filaments and prominences.
This session is appropriate for all ages and costs $5 per person. The program starts at 9:30 a.m. Observations will be subject to weather conditions. Session length is two hours. Advanced registration is required.

Lake Oconee Dentistry will host a free dental care event in association with Dentistry from the Heart at its office located at 1011 Parkside Main, between the Publix parking lot and Spotlight Theatres, in Greensboro.
Drs. David and Patti Bradley will be joined by their associate Dr. Phil Boswell, as well as Dr. David Miller, a local oral surgeon, to provide free extractions, fillings or cleanings. Lake Oconee Dentistry hygienists, dental assistants and other staff members will be donating their time and resources in order to provide free dental care to as many people as possible that day.
Doctors and volunteers will treat the first 100 patients, and possibly more if time allows that day. Treatment will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Event registration will begin at 7 a.m. and patients will be seen through 5 p.m. Patients must be at least 12 years of age to be seen and accompanied by a parent or guardian if under the age of 18. Patients are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and to bring chairs, water, snacks, etc. as they wait outside for their turn. Community volunteers and other local groups, including Lakeside Church, St. Vincent de Paul and Goodwill Industries, will also be on hand to assist that day.
