Hurricane season ends today, and forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – which tracks tropical weather – have released a video that shows satellite imagery of the entire 2011 storm season.

The video is a visual representation of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, which lasts six months, in just four and a half minutes.

NOAA forecasters said 2011 was an active season, producing a total of 19 tropical storms, of which seven became hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. The most significant impact on the United States came from Hurricane Irene, which hit the Caribbean and East Coast in August, causing 55 deaths and more than $10 billion in damages, according to NOAA.

Tropical Storm Lee also had a major effect on the United States, making landfall on the Gulf Coast and then moving northeast, leading to flooding in Pennsylvania and New York.

The data used for the video visualization comes from the GOES satellite, NOAA said. It merges both the visible and the infrared imagery taken by the satellite every 30 minutes over the Northern Hemisphere from June 1 to Nov. 28.
