Lake Oconee Fishing Forecast, Sept. 25, 2014
Published 8:00 am Thursday, September 25, 2014
Lake Conditions – The lake is lightly stained up the rivers and clear elsewhere
Lake Water Temperature – 83 degrees – The slightly cooler weather has begun to slightly drop water temperatures and the fish are reacting.
Largemouth Bass –GOOD – With the cooler weather some fish have moved to shallow water. A white buzzbait, a topwater plug, a green pumpkin Trick worm or a small square bill crankbait will take fish from shallow water around rip-rap, docks, seawalls and any patches of grass. Some fish remain in deeper water around ledges and humps where the Carolina rig and deep diving crankbaits (Strike King 6XD, Norman dd22) will catch fish. The fish have begun to move slightly shallower with the cooler weather and will soon be feasting on shad as they begin to fatten up in the fall.
Crappie – GOOD –The crappie bite continues to be good in the deeper brushpiles and underwater trees. Best bet is to locate the deep brushpiles and trees (10-20 feet) and drop a minnow or jig for best action. The crappie will remain in the trees for another few weeks before they begin to move out of the trees with the coming cooler water temperatures. That is when trolling will come back into play.
Hybrid/Striped/White Bass – FAIR –Some fish are showing up and surface feeding on points from the Highway 44 Bridge to the Wallace Dam. A popping cork with a small Thing popper attached will catch the surface feeding fish but most of the fish are small white and hybrid bass. The action will pick up very soon.
Catfish – GOOD – The catfish are in the main lake and larger creeks and some really big catfish are being caught. Smaller catfish can be caught with worms and other catfish bait but the larger catfish will bite best on live bait, cut bait or bream heads.
