The last few months haven not been the best time to be a police officer in the United States. From Missouri to New York to Ohio, it’s been seemingly all bad news.

However, Officer William Stacy of the Tarrant, Alabama Police Department showed Saturday that they can make the news on a positive side.

Stacy was called to the Dollar General on Pinson Valley Parkway when employees caught a woman trying to steal a carton of eggs, Tarrant Police Chief Dennis Reno told AL.com.

The unidentified woman was not alone. She was accompanied by her young children. She told Stacy that had attempted to steal the eggs so she could feed her children.

Stacy could have ignored her story and taken her directly to jail. Instead, according to Dailymail.co.uk, he knew the desperate mother since he had been called to her house before. He knew she was telling the truth, so Stacy talked the people at Dollar General and they decided not to press charges.

Stacy then had one more act of kindness and made a deal with a mother.

“He said, ‘If I give you these eggs, will you promise that you won’t shoplift anymore?'” Reno said. “He knew that she was telling the truth and that’s the reason he went in and bought the eggs.”

After Stacy bought the eggs and said she could leave, the mother gave him the only gift she had. She hugged Stacy and it was caught on video by a another shopper.
