Texas A&M student assistant coach Michael Richardson must have been having flashbacks when his Aggies took on West Virginia in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl Monday.

Richardson, a former football player for A&M, broke a cardinal rule when he was caught on video twice hitting two opposing players on the sideline in the first half of Texas A&M’s 45-37 win on Monday at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin was made aware of Richardson’s actions at halftime and told Richardson to remain in the locker room for the second half of the game, according to school officials.

Later, Sumlin said he sent Richardson home.

“I was made aware of the situation at halftime, he did not return to the field and he has already been sent home,” Sumlin told reporters. “That’s nothing we condone, there’s nothing about that whole situation that’s a part of who we are and what we believe in. As I said, he has already been sent home, and we’ll deal with that when we get back.”

The game was televised live on ESPN. Cameras showed Richardson smacking two separate Mountaineers. He hit cornerback Daryl Worley in the back of the head with an elbow and later shoved tailback Andrew Buie after both came too close to him on the sideline after a play.
