In the second quarter of 2015, businesses, communities and churches, through their special food drives contributed almost seven tons of food to the Greene County Food Pantry.
The food pantry could not exist without this kind of support. The Greene County Food Pantry Board members and volunteers thank our caring supporters. These included the Greensboro Post Office with 3,500-plus pounds, Del Webb with 1,250-plus pounds, Harbor Club with 1,100-plus pounds and the Union Point Post Office with 1,000 pounds of food. These four drives represented almost half of our second quarter’s donations. Additionally, with these drives we also received a number of cash donations, which was used to purchase frozen meat. Earlier in the quarter, Publix had donated almost 6,000 pounds through their initiative. Long-time supporters, Reynolds Plantation Ladies Club, and the First United Methodist Church combined to donate almost 600 pounds plus some nice checks. These drives were timely in that they provided an extra bag of food for kids who were going to be out of school and home for the summer.
Food from the regional supplier has been limited so the local food drives have filled a needed gap. Any community or church group who would like to sponsor a drive may call 706-453-1380 and talk with Carla Jackson who can assist with details or arrange to have the food picked up. Needed items are canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruits, peanut butter, cereal, dried beans and boxed meals.
